What is GST in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax, introduced July 1, 2017, replacing VAT, excise duty, and service tax with one streamlined system applied at every stage of production and distribution. Use our GST Calculator to instantly compute GST on any amount, or jump straight to 5% or 18% slabs.
GST was introduced to eliminate the cascading effect of taxes (tax on tax) and to promote a transparent, digital-first tax system. The tax is collected at each stage of production and distribution, with businesses able to claim input tax credits for GST paid on purchases.
Who pays GST? Registered businesses, manufacturers, traders, and service providers must collect and remit GST. Consumers ultimately bear the tax cost as it is included in the final price of goods and services. For lower tax brackets, use our 5% GST Calculator for essential items, or calculate 18% GST using our dedicated 18% GST Calculator.
How to Calculate GST
Formula for Exclusive GST
When GST is calculated on a pre-tax amount:
GST Amount = Net Amount × (GST Rate / 100)
Total Amount (Inclusive) = Net Amount + GST Amount
Formula for Inclusive GST
When GST is already included in the total price:
Net Amount = Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
GST Amount = Total Amount - Net Amount
Example: Calculate GST at 18% on ₹1000
Exclusive GST:
Net Amount = ₹1000
GST (18%) = ₹1000 × 18% = ₹180
Total (Inclusive) = ₹1000 + ₹180 = ₹1180
Inclusive GST:
Total Amount = ₹1000 (including GST)
Net Amount = ₹1000 / 1.18 = ₹847.46
GST (18%) = ₹1000 - ₹847.46 = ₹152.54
Our GST Calculator India automates these calculations instantly for all supported slabs. Need to calculate for a specific rate? Use our 5% GST Calculator for lower tax slabs or use our 18% GST Calculator for the most common tax rate.
GST Slabs in India
Following the GST Council's GST 2.0 reform (effective September 22, 2025), India's earlier five-tier structure was simplified into four main slabs. Rates and product classifications can be revised again, so always confirm the current rate for a specific product or service with the official GST Portal. See our Understanding GST Slabs guide for a fuller explanation.
Nil / 0% GST Slab
Reserved for select essential items considered exempt from GST, such as certain unbranded food staples and specified life-saving items — illustrative categories, not a complete list.
5% GST Slab
Applied to everyday and priority items considered important but not fully exempt, including many items previously taxed at 12%. Calculate 5% GST instantly with our dedicated tool.
18% GST Slab
The standard, default rate now covering most goods and services, including many items that previously fell under the old 12% and 28% slabs. Calculate 18% GST using our dedicated calculator.
40% GST Slab
A higher rate reserved for a narrow set of luxury and "sin" goods, such as tobacco products and certain high-end items, replacing the old 28% slab's top end.
Earlier versions of India's GST structure also included 12% and 28% slabs; most items in those bands have since been reassigned to the 5% or 18% rates. If you see a 12% or 28% rate referenced elsewhere, treat it as historical unless confirmed current on an official source.
