What is GST in India

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax system introduced in India on July 1, 2017. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, excise duty, and service tax with a single, streamlined tax structure. GST is levied on the supply of goods and services across India, creating a common market and simplifying tax compliance for businesses.

GST was introduced to eliminate the cascading effect of taxes (tax on tax) and to promote a transparent, digital-first tax system. The tax is collected at each stage of production and distribution, with businesses able to claim input tax credits for GST paid on purchases.

Who pays GST? Registered businesses, manufacturers, traders, and service providers must collect and remit GST. Consumers ultimately bear the tax cost as it is included in the final price of goods and services. Use our GST Calculator to instantly compute GST on any amount. For lower tax brackets, use our 5% GST Calculator for essential items, or calculate 18% GST using our dedicated 18% GST Calculator.

How to Calculate GST

Formula for Exclusive GST

When GST is calculated on a pre-tax amount:

GST Amount = Net Amount × (GST Rate / 100)
Total Amount (Inclusive) = Net Amount + GST Amount

Formula for Inclusive GST

When GST is already included in the total price:

Net Amount = Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
GST Amount = Total Amount - Net Amount

Example: Calculate GST at 18% on ₹1000

Exclusive GST:

Net Amount = ₹1000
GST (18%) = ₹1000 × 18% = ₹180
Total (Inclusive) = ₹1000 + ₹180 = ₹1180

Inclusive GST:

Total Amount = ₹1000 (including GST)
Net Amount = ₹1000 / 1.18 = ₹847.46
GST (18%) = ₹1000 - ₹847.46 = ₹152.54
